Vestiges

2001

Elliot Smith Contemporary Art, St. Louis, MO

With the series Vestiges I depart from using poems as a direct element in my work.  Instead, I use the origin of language itself as a source for content and graphic inspiration.  Where I once used detritus picked up in the woods or along the road here, I continue to use abandoned wooden artifacts such as scythe handles (called snaths), a rake, and an artist’s model of a hand now in combination with knotted industrial waxed linen to form hybrids.  Spirit Wall II, composed of seven scorched and stained ironing board covers, is a transitional piece that incorporates themes and imagery from two previous bodies of work.
